Mission Statement

Published since 1988, the Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine (JABFM ) is the official peer-reviewed journal of the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM). Believing that the public and scientific communities are best served by open access to information, JABFM makes its articles available free of charge and without registration at JABFM is indexed by Medline, Index Medicus, and other services.

JABFM publishes six bimonthly issues per year, comprising original material from authors with new knowledge to contribute to the understanding and advancement of family medicine research and clinical practice. JABFM also serves as an important forum for the specialty of family medicine, and as a source of news from the ABFM.

JABFM delivers incisive, peer-reviewed, up-to-date content comprising

  • ethics and humanities essays
  • family medicine across the globe
  • evidence-based guidelines
  • practice-based research
  • health care systems, services, policies,
  • lively correspondence

Approximately 900 print copies of each issue are in circulation. Online hits (access events) per month average 24,000 (home page) and 53,000 (total). Our impact factor for 2005 is 1.636.

JABFM uses the online Rapid Review system for editorial management, accessible at via the author or reviewer portal. Rapid Review expedites the submission and peer review of manuscripts and provides easy, up-to-date manuscript status information for users.

Manuscript Invitation

The Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine welcomes high-quality manuscripts that contribute to family medicine as a clinical scientific discipline. High priority is given to clinically relevant studies that have practical implications for improved patient care.

Manuscripts are evaluated considering the extent to which they:

  • represent original work
  • are significant to the advancement of family medicine
  • are of interest to the practicing family physician

JABFM is targeted primarily to family medicine physicians and researchers, and all those interested in the field of family medicine.
