The Mind-Body Relationship in Anxiety Disorders: Therapeutic Implications

Sirosh Masuood, MD

November 11, 2022

Through recalling two patient experiences, Dr Sirosh Masuood considers the interactions of mind and body that ground a proper understanding of anxiety disorders, an understanding that informs effective treatment.

In the first narrative, an early career encounter with a patient exposed the full complexity of addressing physical symptoms as expressions of mental disorders and prompted Masuood's choice of consultation-liaison psychiatry as a subspecialty. In the second account, a more recent patient experience produced greater therapeutic dividends, as a multifaceted approach led to a significant reduction in a patient's required pharmacologic interventions.
