Pruritus is a symptom that is particularly important to patients because of the discomfort it causes and its effect on sleep and other aspects of quality of life. It is underrecognized by physicians and other providers. There clearly is a need for more direct and consistent questioning of patients about this, and other symptoms. When pruritis is present, the clinical evaluation should be focused on typical causes with special attention to health of the skin. A variety of treatments are available, including the medication difelikefalin, the first drug approved for this indication in the United States.
