In order to illustrate the devastating costs of disparities in the treatment of metastatic breast cancer, Kathy D. Miller, MD, unfolds the moving story of a patient who, in full awareness of the consequences of the disease and because of financial realities, had little choice but to proceed without advantage of the latest therapies.

This scenario, Dr Miller suggests, in which the standard treatment options remain beyond reach for many patients is unfortunate in a time and place that could ameliorate, or perhaps even eliminate, such harsh and restrictive circumstances.
