Kathy D. Miller, MD, reviews the dramatic leaps in therapeutics for advanced and metastatic breast cancer in the context of recalling a specific patient's treatment course. Invoking memory of earlier career experience, Dr Miller describes a scene where, several years after initial diagnosis and untreated with hormone therapy, the patient developed metastatic breast cancer.
The ensuing prescribed treatments of that time involved consequences for the patient that later innovations would mitigate, if not overcome, thus leading Dr Miller to contemplate the vast distances crossed in breast cancer care.
