Evaluating Athletes With Comorbid Medical Conditions

It is the responsibility of health care providers to provide guidance and counseling to athletes with medical conditions who may be associated with increased risk for severe coronavirus. COVID-19 infection can result in damage to the kidneys, lungs, and vascular symptoms, and produce fluid balance alterations, coagulopathies, and heat stroke during exercise (Diamond et al., 2021). Parents should be encouraged to list all previous and current medical conditions on the pre-participation health questionnaire. Providers will use the athlete's previous history to determine the need for follow-up evaluation. Although the AAP does not provide specific recommendations for underlying medical conditions, it is recommended that athletes consult with their specialist before physical participation (Diamond et al., 2021).
