Jonathan Silverberg, MD, PhD, MPH, recalls an impactful patient experience as a junior attending physician with a patient with skin of color who presented with severe atopic dermatitis, despite previously being told that it was psychogenic itch. Upon examination, Dr Silverberg encountered erythrodermic atopic dermatitis in this patient and also follicular lesions which were missed in previous examinations.
Dr Silverberg uses this example to illustrate the knowledge gaps and disparities in the treatment of atopic dermatitis in patients with skin of color.
