Guns in the Home

About one-third of American homes with children have guns, and approximately 4.6 million children live in homes with guns that are unlocked and loaded (American Academy of Pediatrics, n.d.; Azrael et al., 2018). Evidence suggests that gun-owning households are associated with a threefold higher risk of homicide and fivefold higher risk of suicide (Council on Injury, Violence, and Poison Prevention Executive Committee, 2012). Despite these startling statistics, simply storing guns locked and unloaded can significantly decrease the risk of unintentional injury, death, and suicide for children (Council on Injury, Violence, and Poison Prevention Executive Committee, 2012).
