David A. Wohl, MD, meditates on how in medicine, "the only constant is change" and that the idea of practicing the same medicine over smaller and smaller spans of time, even 5 years, is increasingly untenable, no matter the specialty. In the face of ever accelerating therapeutic advances which frequently convert formerly life-threatening illnesses into managed conditions, Dr Wohl advises arising practitioners to always heed "the long game" and to be prepared for perpetual self-reinvention in order to meet the demands of evolving medicine.
