This systematic review demonstrates established efficacy for memantine, including reductions in migraine frequency, severity, and overall headache days in the short-term treatment of episodic migraine. It was also well tolerated with no severe side effects reported. Thus, memantine could be considered as a treatment option in patients for whom previous therapy is ineffective, not tolerated, or contraindicated. At this time, the long-term efficacy of memantine for migraine has not been established.
