The observations in this study were generally conducted until noon in the 8 AM to 4 PM shift and until 9 PM in the 4 PM to 8 AM shift. Data were not collected at all during the night shift. In the absence of a central recording system, these time slots were used as a cross-section of the day. The inability to make observations throughout the day is a limitation of the study that may have affected our findings regarding alarm frequency and the responses to the alarms.
