Are Your Patients Ordering Their Own Tests Online?

June 02, 2021

At-home tests for a variety of medical biomarkers have become available in recent years. Some of those tests must be ordered by a physician.

Any patient can decide to order their own test, request it from a company, receive it after a contracted physician approves the order, send in their sample, and get their results without setting foot in a medical office.

Testing for COVID-19 at home, for example, is convenient, and some tests don't require prescriptions, but pathology experts have cautioned that false positives, false negatives, out-of-pocket costs, and the potential for inadequate sampling from people swabbing their own noses or mouths could compromise results.
