The NICE guideline says to offer verbal and written information about osteoarthritis to those with the condition to help enhance their understanding of the condition and how it’s managed, and to also dispel misconceptions about the condition, for example, that it cannot be treated.
NICE also explains how the use of local heat or cold, and manipulation and stretching, should be considered, and advice given on how to lose weight if this is necessary. NICE says that TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) can be considered to aid with pain relief, but that glucosamine and chondroitin products should not be offered.
