Step 2 CS Canceled: What Do You Think?

February 10, 2021

The Step 2 Clinical Skills (CS) test for medical students and med school graduates has been permanently canceled, cosponsors of the US Medical Licensing Examination announced in January.

The all-day exam, which traditionally requires test takers to have physical contact with standardized patients, had been suspended during the pandemic for safety reasons; the sponsors were unable to identify a way to virtually assess clinical skills. Last May, sponsors of the test announced that they would continue to suspend Step 2 CS for the next 12 to 18 months.

"[W]e have no plans to bring back Step 2 CS," the cosponsors said in their announcement, "but we intend to take this opportunity to focus on working with our colleagues in medical education and at the state medical boards to determine innovative ways to assess clinical skills."
