The effectiveness of povidone iodine and sterile technique is widely accepted among cataract surgeons in reducing the risk of endophthalmitis.[12] No measure has received a clinical recommendation rating of A and only povidone iodine has received a clinical recommendation rating of B, meaning it is moderately important to clinical outcome.[12] Most physicians use postoperative topical antibiotics but additional preventive methods such as the use of preoperative and perioperative antibiotics vary within the United States and around the world.[13]
