The effectiveness of povidone iodine and sterile technique is widely accepted among cataract surgeons in reducing the risk of endophthalmitis. No measure has received a clinical recommendation rating of A and only povidone iodine has received a clinical recommendation rating of B, meaning it is moderately important to clinical outcome. Most physicians use postoperative topical antibiotics but additional preventive methods such as the use of preoperative and perioperative antibiotics vary within the United States and around the world.
