The 21st Century Cures Act, passed in 2016, requires that patients have access to the clinical notes within their medical records.
Regulations implementing the requirements were originally scheduled to take effect on November 2, 2020. But this week, the Department of Health and Human Services extended the deadline to April 5, 2020. The regulations will dramatically expand a practice that few health systems have piloted previously.
