If someone has a suspicious pigmented skin lesion with a weighted 7-point checklist score of 3 or more, NICE advises referring the person for a specialist assessment using a suspected cancer pathway to be seen within 2 weeks.

These major features score 2 points each - change in size, irregular shape, irregular colour. These minor features score 1 point each – change in sensation, oozing, inflammation, largest diameter of 7mm or more.

NICE also recommends referring a person using a suspected cancer pathway if dermoscopy suggests skin melanoma.
