NICE says to refer those aged 45 and over who have unexplained visible haematuria without urinary tract infection (UTI), or who have visible haematuria that persists or recurs after successful UTI treatment, for bladder cancer assessment using a suspected cancer pathway referral.

Those aged 60 and over with unexplained non-visible haematuria and either dysuria or a raised blood white cell count should also be referred using a suspected cancer pathway referral for bladder cancer.
