Coding and SARS-COVID-19

The rules and regulations of coding symptoms, conditions, diseases, and manifestations are the same. In the absence of a confirmed diagnosis, code symptoms such as R05 Cough, R06.02 Shortness of breath and/or R50.9 Fever, unspecified. For confirmed cases of COVID-19, code accordingly (Table 3).

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) now permits providers to waive cost-sharing for certain COVID-19 testing-related services, from March 18, 2020, to the end of the PHE. "Cost-Sharing waived" or the CS modifier is billed to identify the service as subject to the cost-sharing wavier for COVID-19 testing-related services, and providers will receive 100% of the Medicare-approved payment amount. Medicare patients cannot be charged any co-insurance and/or deductible amounts for those services when the CS modifier is used. CMS also stated that modifier CR (catastrophe/disaster related) is not required during this PHE. See Table 4 for an overview of Remote Physiologic Monitoring Services and their accompanying codes.
