About 600 frontline healthcare workers in the United States have died from the coronavirus, according to a tally by Kaiser Health News and The Guardian.

The number includes doctors, nurses, paramedics, and healthcare staff such as hospital janitors, hospital administrators, and nursing home workers. Most of these workers identified as African American or Asian/Pacific Islander.

Lost on the Frontline, a project by Kaiser Health News and The Guardian, features the names and obituaries of more than 100 of those workers. More profiles will be added twice weekly, the news outlets said Monday.

The CDC had recorded more than 71,000 cases and 375 deaths among healthcare professionals as of Tuesday morning, though it says the number is an undercount.

The number of reported deaths is "expected to grow," according to Kaiser Health News. The Lost on the Frontline project will track information such as race and ethnicity, age, profession, location, and access to personal protective gear. A free interactive database will be released to the public this summer, the news outlet reported.

"In some states, medical staff account for as many as 20% of known coronavirus cases," according to the project's home page.

The reporting team from both publications has collected information from media reports, family, friends, colleagues, and unions. The project's aim is to also document how and why so many healthcare workers have died during the pandemic.

Worldwide, more than 600 nurses have died from COVID-19, the International Council of Nurses announced on June 3. More than 450,000 healthcare workers may have contracted COVID-19, the group estimates.

"For weeks now, we have been asking for data about infections and deaths among nurses to be collected," Howard Catton, the group's CEO, said in the news release. "Countries need clear reporting and monitoring mechanisms."

Medscape has published a memorial list to commemorate frontline healthcare workers who have died in the pandemic. It will continue to be updated as, sadly, needed. Please help us ensure this list is complete by submitting names with an age, profession or specialty, and location through this form.
