Prostate Cancer Risk Higher in Men With IBD

Why this matters

  • Findings suggest that even outside the setting of routine PC screening, men with IBD are at a higher risk of PC.

Study design

  • This prospective, population-based UK Biobank cohort study included 218,084 men (aged 40-69 years; 2,311 men with a history of IBD and 215,773 men without a history of IBD) between 2006 and 2010.

  • Association between IBD and subsequent PC was evaluated.

  • Funding: National Institutes of Health.

Key results

  • After a median follow-up of 78 months, men with IBD were at an increased risk of PC (adjusted HR [aHR], 1.31; 95% CI, 1.03-1.67; P=.029).

  • PC risk was especially increased in men with UC (aHR, 1.47; 95% CI, 1.11-1.95; P=.0070) and not Crohn’s disease (aHR, 1.06; 95% CI, 0.63-1.80; P=.82)

  • Increasing HR was seen across years since:

    • IBD diagnosis:

      • ≤20 years: aHR, 1.22 (95% CI, 0.89-1.66); and

      • >20 years: aHR, 1.49 (95% CI, 1.01-2.19; Ptrend=.018).

    • UC diagnosis:

      • ≤20 years: aHR, 1.29 (95% CI, 0.89-1.85); and

      • >20 years: aHR, 1.87 (95% CI, 1.21-2.91; Ptrend=.0022).

  • The study was unable to account for the frequency of healthcare encounters in the analysis of incident PC.

  • UK Biobank data did not provide information regarding cancer grade or stage.
