Cast Care

Instruction about cast care given to the patient and parents is key. Common points of proper cast care include the following: maintaining a clean and dry cast, not inserting foreign objects inside the cast, not using sharp instruments to scratch itchy skin underneath. Compliance with weight bearing status is imperative to avoid loss of reduction. Follow-up as instructed is essential to patient treatment. If instructed to wear a cast shoe the patient will avoid walking on the cast and causing wear at the heel region of the cast. If the patient develops pain under the cast, especially the heel, the parents should notify the physician's office. The cast should be inspected regularly, and the physician or emergency room should be consulted if there are any concerns.
