Appropriate treatment of VM often requires a conversation with the patient. Factors to consider include the patient's goals, reasonable expectations, the impact symptoms are having on the quality of life, the presence of comorbidities, and possible medication side effects. For those in need of pharmacological prophylactic medication, at present we lack quality clinical trials to guide treatment decisions and therefore must borrow from our knowledge of the treatment of migraine headache. Future studies, it may be hoped, will shed light on the treatment efficacy of medications to treat VM.
