Conclusion

A growing body of evidence indicates that PPIs cause alterations of the gut microbiome composition. However, the functional relevance of PPI-induced dysbiosis is unclear, and the involvement of gut microbiota in PPI-associated adverse events remains largely inconclusive. Larger, controlled, prospective trials are required to understand the impact of PPIs on the gut microbiome and their implications on health and disease.
