COVID-19 concerns have led to the cancellation of the Diabetes UK Professional Conference which was due to take place in Glasgow later this month. This follows similar announcements from some other medical events around the world.

The charity's Senior Media Manager Charlie Breslin told attendees by email the decision to cancel had been taken "after very careful consideration".

He continued: "This is not a decision we have come to lightly. Our decision making has been informed by detailed risk assessment, but we sought to balance our commitment to delivering a conference that we know provides real value and impact, with our deep and genuine concern for the health and wellbeing of all our conference attendees.

"Hospitals are currently operating at the highest-possible national incident response level, to enable them to be as prepared as possible for the impact of the COVID19 outbreak. On that basis, we do not believe it would be right or responsible to proceed with holding the conference when the NHS is in such need of its expert workforce. Equally we are mindful of our responsibility to support efforts to delay the spread of COVID-19 across the UK."
