In England, 19% of long-term sickness absence is attributed to mental ill health according to NICE, who also highlight that stress and acute conditions are responsible for many long-term absences, as are musculoskeletal injuries and back pain. Employers spend around £9 billion a year on sick pay and associated costs, NICE says.
