In the guidelines NICE explains how the 'fit note' (statement of fitness for work) should be completed by the medical practitioner - this may be a GP or secondary care specialist - with the most relevant recent knowledge of the person's health, the reason for their absence from work, and their prognosis for returning to work. The Government is considering changes that will allow other healthcare professionals to sign the fit note other than medical practitioners.
