Described by some as possibly the “most damaging medical hoax of the 20th century” the study published in The Lancet in 1998 claimed that the MMR vaccine was linked to autism. The study was discredited and subsequently retracted by the journal. Its author Andrew Wakefield was struck off the medical register by the GMC. In August 2019 the UK lost its measles-free status, having achieved virus elimination status in 2017. The Swine flu pandemic (2009) celebrated its tenth anniversary in 2019, and the 1995 Pill scare celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2020.
