Are You Seeing Benefits or Harms From Marijuana Use?

September 11, 2019

As more US states legalize medical or recreational marijuana, use is increasing. Almost 1 million more Americans ages 12 or older reported using marijuana in their lifetime in 2018 than in 2017, according to data from a national survey published in August.

Advocates are exploring uses for marijuana for conditions from pain to weight loss, but researchers are also documenting a rise in marijuana-related adverse events following legalization.

After Massachusetts legalized medical marijuana in 2012, researchers found that cannabis-related calls to a poison control center involving children and teens doubled. In Colorado, the number of cannabis-associated emergency department visits rose sharply after marijuana was legalized in the state, and a disproportionate number involved edibles.
