Future Directions

Surgeons will be faced with an ever-increasing amount of technological advances and equipment, and they must maintain awareness of firm scientific rationale and evidence on the proper use of these materials. As the FDA's ability to review and regulate remains finite, and manufacturers are not always willing to invest the resources needed to gain successful approval for every possible application of their product, the number of off-label possibilities will continue to increase significantly in the future. As such, surgeons must remain abreast of medical developments while carefully following guidelines such as the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Standards of Professionalism on Orthopaedic Surgeon-Industry Relationships to avoid potential conflicts.[41]
