Stand by You: Reflections of an Attending Physician

Rounds were over and, mostly, not much more had to be done other than write notes and arrange discharges. The resident physician was still at the hospital. I was not.

But then a nurse called. A patient had a new complaint. "He doesn't look good," the resident said to me over the phone. "I'm concerned about him."

And the way she sounded, I knew she meant it.
