NICE advises that adults with an infected leg ulcer should be referred for specialist advice if the infection is spreading and is not responding to oral antibiotics. Having a higher risk of complications or underlying medical conditions may make the leg ulcer more difficult to treat, so specialist advice should be sought, when intravenous antibiotics may be recommended.
