In summary, the study quantifies the cumulative and per-capital costs incurred in the year prior to ACDF in patients with cervical radiculopathy for nonoperative diagnostic and treatment modalities. Nonoperative costs prior to ACDF averaged $1143 per patient compared with operative costs for ACDF of $18,142 for the hospital stay, and $4457 in professional payments. Approximately two-thirds of the $14.3 million nonoperative costs for cervical radiculopathy are from diagnostic modalities. As institutions begin entering into bundled payments for cervical spine disease, understanding condition specific costs is a critical first step.
