This study evaluated the safety of overlapping surgery, an important and timely health care issue for patients, physicians, hospital administrators, and policymakers in the United States. We demonstrated that the practice of overlapping surgery in plastic surgery did not compromise patient safety or clinical outcomes. These data contribute to the evolving discussion on overlapping surgery while improving our ability to counsel patients in the informed consent process and guide policies aimed at maintaining safe, high-quality surgical care.
