Profilin Also Induces Severe Reactions

Profilin also seems to be able to induce severe reactions.[19] Fäh et al.[37] reported a case of anaphylactic reaction to lychee fruit. The patient in that case showed broad cross-reactivity between lychee fruit and other plants. They identified profilin as the protein responsible for the complex allergy syndrome in patients and noted that large amount of profilin might exceed the capacity of gastric protein digestion, and therefore, lead to significant absorption of level profilin, resulting in anaphylaxis. Alvarado et al.[38] also investigated the role of profilins as severe food allergens in allergic patients overexposed to grass who were referred for severe food reactions and were sensitized to profilins. They performed oral provocation tests with purified profilin, and found that many patients showed severely positive reactions at low doses of profilin. They concluded that profilins are complete food allergens in food-allergic patient populations exposed to high levels of grass pollen.

Given these findings, profilin should be considered as not only a diagnosis-confounding factor and a minor respiratory allergen, but also as a potentially severe food allergen and a marker for severe grass allergies.
