Data Extraction

In terms of clinical trials investigating use of stem cells to treat Alzheimer's disease, authors repeatedly searched, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), Embase, PubMed, PsycINFO, and Web of Science from 1 July to 30 September 2018 using MeSH terms: 'Dementia,' and 'Stem cell.' Reference lists from identified articles and reviews were manually searched to find additional studies. Language restrictions were not utilized. Authors S.M.W. and M.C.S. initially independently reviewed the abstracts identified from the literature search to determine if they met the scope of our review. Two other authors (D.W.K. and H.K.L.) re-evaluated the articles to confirm that they clearly met the selection criteria. If a disagreement occurred, the article in question was discussed and a consensus was reached by the review of two remaining authors (H.R.N. and C.U.L.). This article is a narrative review focusing on clinical implications and mechanisms of action of stem cells for treatment of Alzheimer's disease. On the basis of the consensus among the authors, all relevant studies meeting the scope of our article were selected.
