Drawing the Heart

Courtesy of Instituto del Patrimonio Cultural de España

This early drawing appears in a sketch of a mammoth and goes back to the prehistoric era.[3] The sketch of the heart-shaped object closely resembles a modern valentine and may have served as an illustration for Neolithic hunters to show where to aim a spear in order to kill this large animal. True anatomical drawings of the heart, based on the organs of executed criminals, did not appear until the 16th century, in one of the stained glass windows of Chartres Cathedral.[3]
