Leading cancer expert, Professor Martin Gore, 67, died suddenly yesterday following a routine vaccination for yellow fever.

Prof Martin Gore

The Royal Marsden Trust (RMT) has set up a hotline for patients of Prof Gore and anyone with clinical queries: 020 8915 6899.

The Royal Marsden said the loss of Prof Gore will be immense: "Martin was at the heart of The Royal Marsden's life and work in research, treatment and the training of our next generation of oncologists. His contribution as Medical Director for 10 years, a Trustee of The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, and as a clinician is unparalleled."

The Royal College of Radiologists said on Twitter: "Prof Gore was a leading light in pioneering ovarian, melanoma & renal cancer research, & he worked tirelessly to improve patient care."

Prof Mel Greaves, from The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR), said: "Martin was something of a force of nature, very energetic, clear thinking and compassionate. It's a huge loss, particularly to his family and the RMT."

Prof Paul Workman, Chief Executive of the ICR, said: "I am shocked and saddened by this unexpected and tragic news.

"Beyond his outstanding clinical and research contributions to The Royal Marsden, Martin was a great supporter of our joint institution, and will be badly missed."

Professor of Cancer Medicine and Medical Oncology at Imperial College, Justin Stebbing, said: "I worked for him in 2000 and he was like a father figure to all the registrars – I didn't realise until I became a consultant he was the same to them too. I remember the detail he went into with everyone and everything, and the team spirit he fostered."

Yellow Fever

The NHS says the vaccine to protect against yellow fever is "very effective" but isn't suitable for everyone and is not always recommended for some people including babies, people over the age of 60, and those with weakened immune systems.

Award winning foreign correspondent Malcolm Brabant has written and made a film chronicling his reaction to a routine yellow fever vaccination which he says left him with severe psychosis.
