NICE guidelines advise that based on the evidence, expert experience, and data related to antibiotic resistance, antibiotic prophylaxis should not be routinely offered to those with a short-term urinary catheter or to those with a long-term (indwelling or intermittent) urinary catheter. Neither is routine antibiotic prophylaxis recommended before short-term catheter insertion for urodynamic, surgical, and non-surgical procedures, whilst the catheter is in place, or when it is removed.
