Pulmonary Conditions Specific to ESLD Patients

Pulmonary conditions specific to patients with ESLD include hepatopulmonary syndrome (HPS), portopulmonary hypertension (PoPH), and hepatic hydrothorax (HH). Long-term mortality of each condition is high (Table 1). With orthotopic liver transplant (OLT), mortality declines substantially in HPS and HH. OLT is generally felt to improve outcomes in PoPH as well though this remains an ongoing debate. Management of these specific conditions is discussed here.
