Conclusions

High-resolution anoscopy screening was generally well tolerated. Patients reported high tolerance and acceptance of pain experienced during and after HRA, and we did not identify significant barriers to patients returning for a repeat HRA. With sufficient prior counselling by clinicians on the risks and discomforts of the procedure, HRA may be an acceptable screening approach for detection of anal cancer precursors in HIV-infected men and women at high risk of anal cancer. We highlight several practical considerations regarding HRA in clinical practice that may be useful for providers caring for these patient groups.
