Get Appointed to a Committee
Laschever advises female physicians to negotiate to be recommended for a seat on a powerful hospital committee. "This can raise your profile and enhance your prestige within a hospital. If it's a small physicians group, you can ask for greater authority or some decision making power that can make a difference to you," she explained.
Templeton encourages female physicians to inquire about participating in practice management or compensation committees and ask if discussion of compensation and benefits is open to all members of a department.
It's also wise to negotiate about your job title and getting additional duties such as serving on a professional development committee. "This can help you build on your CV," Fortin said.
If you are interviewing at a teaching hospital and you love teaching, say, 'I'm willing to take x amount, but I want x amount of teaching sessions,' Fortin suggests.
The 'Broken Record' Technique
Grethlein advises female physicians to use the "broken record" technique when negotiating for salary and benefits. This involves repeating the same response while someone is pushing you for a different answer.
For example, if a prospective employer tells you that there is a budget crisis and they don't have the money to meet your requests, you say, "I understand how you feel, but to be successful I need (whatever it is you are requesting)."
When using this technique, it's important not to get angry or to appear as though you are escalating things, but to take a solid position and have a rationale tied to it.
"Tell them again, 'In order for me to be successful in the job you are hiring me to do I need these resources.' Have the data behind what you need and repeat, 'If you are hiring me to improve your tracking of statistics that has not been successfully accomplished with the current staffing. I will need one FTE in order to accomplish what you're hiring me to do.' I am tying what I need to why I need it in a consistent, firm, and respectful way," Grethlein said.
