Mr. A as a Patient

Old age is a stage that is associated with changes, often losses across domains of health, employment, and relationships. This involves the experience of grief followed by redefining of one's identity. Any difficulty in doing so harms the older adult's sense of self. In this section, we will use the example of Mr. A as a prototype to elucidate changes in elderly adults that should matter to clinical discussions about death wishes and rational suicide.
