According to the NICE guideline, brief advice is defined as typically less than 10 minutes, and very brief advice is given "as the opportunity arises" in under 30 seconds. The brief advice can cover asking about smoking status, giving information on the harms of smoking and benefits of quitting, and options for support and smoking cessation methods. Taking the approach of brief interventions has been found to be both effective and cost-effective.
