NICE states that in 2015/16, around 474,000 NHS hospital admissions were associated with smoking-related conditions, and 16% (79,000) of all deaths were linked to smoking.

Overall smoking rates have been declining but nearly 7 million people in England are still smokers. Evidence suggests NHS help in quitting gives patients a better chance of success.
