According to PHE around half of all cases are reported in the South East and South West of England. A significant number of cases also occur in Scotland. Symptoms are also possible in patients with a recent history of northern hemisphere travel where Borrelia ticks, including B. burgdorferi sensu strictu (ss), B. afzelii and B. garinii, are prevalent, including Europe and North America. Many cases are diagnosed by clinicians based on clinical findings, without serological testing, including through identification of the distinctive red erythema migrans rash.
