Conclusion
Several new promising treatments have recently become available for the treatment of IBS. Although they are more effective than placebo in treating IBS symptoms, a majority of patients who receive these treatments will remain symptomatic. In addition, most of these agents are aimed at normalizing an erratic bowel pattern and are not suitable for use in all patients. Therefore, an effective therapeutic relationship, dietary and lifestyle adjustments as well as the traditional medical therapies remain important in the treatment of IBS.
