Rule-out for Mi Does Not Always Equal Outpatient Management

Because the novel strategies were developed to safely rule out MI, but not other disorders that still may require hospital admission such as UA, pulmonary embolism, aortic dissection, or severe sepsis from pneumonia, the percentage of patients that can possibly be managed as outpatients is smaller than the percentage of patients ruled out for MI. Besides, standard operating procedures should be in place to ensure appropriate follow-up of patients rapidly discharged from the ED, which often will include outpatient functional cardiac stress testing.
