McLean Hospital in Belmont, Massachusetts, leads the pack in the newly released 2017-2018 US News and World Report annual ranking of the best adult psychiatric hospitals in the United States.

McLean Hospital was ranked number 2 in last year's ranking by the magazine but rose to number 1 this year, edging out Massachusetts General Hospital, which held the number 1 spot last year and now sits at number 2 in the ranking.

The remainder of the top 12 hospitals for adult psychiatric care got shuffled around a bit this year compared to last year.

The Menninger Clinic, which held the number 5 spot last year, rose to the number 3 spot this year. New York–Presbyterian, last year's number 3, fell to number 4 in the new ranking, while Johns Hopkins Hospital dropped to number 5 this year from number 4 last year. Nearly 33 million patients present each year to a US hospital for a procedure or other care. US News started ranking hospitals in 1990 to help patients make more informed health-related decisions. A total of 4658 community hospitals were assessed, covering 16 specialties. For 12 of these specialities, a mostly data-driven evaluation was used, the magazine says.

However, psychiatry (along with ophthalmology, rheumatology, and rehabilitation) was scored entirely on reputation, as measured in annual surveys of physicians conducted in 2015, 2016, and 2017. The 12 hospitals ranked for psychiatry were recommended by at least 5% of the psychiatrist specialists responding to US News surveys in those years.

Overall, across all specialties, US News named Mayo Clinic as the top hospital on the honor roll, followed by the Cleveland Clinic and Johns Hopkins Hospital. The honor roll is a distinction awarded to 20 hospitals that deliver "exceptional treatment across multiple areas of care," the magazine says.

More information on the US News best hospital report is available on the magazine's website.
