Conclusion

Clinicians caring for elderly adults in primary care should be aware of important side effects and drug–drug interactions with agents commonly prescribed in this population. Table 3 provides a summary of important side effects of drugs commonly prescribed in elderly adults in primary care. Recognizing drug side effects and potential drug–drug interactions is essential to appropriate prescribing. Clinicians should consider whether an individual's new symptom could be a drug side effect, be aware of potential drug–-drug interactions whenever prescribing a new agent, and know which individuals are at highest risk of specific drug side effects.
